Decluttering

I am looking forward to moving. Nothing whips you into shape like the thought of boxing up and moving stuff you never use.

I am a reformed pack rat. I come by it very naturally. My grandmas house was packed - and I mean packed - full of useless stuff. It bordered on hoarding. No, it didn't. It was hoarding. She had her stuff, her moms stuff and her MIL's stuff. She couldn't bear the thought of parting with any of it.

My mom's house is getting better. S-L-O-W-L-Y. At least she isn't bringing more into the house, so that is a start.

I started my adult life with lots of junk. My dad had died when I was 16, and Marty and I got our first apartment when I was 17. (I know, I know...) It was furnished with most of the stuff from my mom's house. You know, stuff it had taken her 20+ years to accumulate. All of those things that were still perfectly useful, but too painful for my mom to keep.

I used to hold on to things because they were my dads. It took me a long time to realize that having something of his won't bring him back and doesn't change the memories I have. Now, if I can't use something, out it goes.

Right now I have a box of kitchen stuff to go out (Why do I have two Tupperware ice cream scoops??) and probably a bunch of Tupperware. I also have two complete twin bed duvet sets, some board games, school books and other odds and ends. Maybe I should have a yard sale?
